It's safe if your 13 and up but it can affect different people in different ways, so I'd suggest taking your time with that and not reading it if you cannot handle romance. There is some romance and it was hinted all along at the beginning during the sewing competition and after. She's strong and shows girls that they can follow their dreams no matter what obstacles or hurdles may lay in their way. Maia is an amazing role model when it comes to following your dreams and doing anything it takes, (including putting yourself in danger), to make sure her family is safe for the future. The whole idea of disguising as a man to do what she loves and to prove that a girl can become an imperial tailor just the same as man assures me that this book provides a lot of positive messages. Spin the Dawn is one of the best and most beautiful books I have ever read. Overall, I still found this book entertaining, and it merited a well-deserved four-star rating from me. I wish romance wasn’t wielded as a plot device to drive the story forward, as the author showed a lot of potential without the heavy infusion. Unfortunately, I cannot say that this is the case here.Īlthough the beginning of the book is propelled forward by the story and writing itself, once the romance begins to blossom, it quickly dominates the story. In other words, the romance takes a back seat. Personally, I enjoy books that have the romantic aspect of the plot toned down more.
My only complaint is in regards to the romance. The author integrates the setting element of the plot immensely well, and creates an immersive and thrilling experience all the way through the story. The setting is inspired by Chinese culture, but there is an interesting combination of different Middle-Eastern as well as Japanese customs too. However, the story unfolds into something that is completely its own. That description is pretty accurate in terms of the book’s plot. Spin the Dawn has been marketed as a mash-up between Mulan and Project Runway.
Author Elizabeth Lim weaves a fascinating and enthralling story in this retelling of Mulan.
